Spinal Cord Stimulator Evaluations
Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is becoming a widely used treatment for a number of pain conditions, and it is frequently considered as a pain management option when conservative or less invasive techniques have proven ineffective. It is common to be referred to a psychological assessment as part of the screening process to evaluate the likelihood of successful outcomes. The examination consists of a conversation between you and the psychologist about your medical history, including your chronic pain struggles. It also involves a social history, family history, information about previous alcohol or substance use, and what kind of psychological treatment you may have had in the past.
What if I am depressed or anxious? Will that stop me from having the stimulator placement? No. Research shows chronic pain patients are much more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety than the general public. It is typical and expected that people living with chronic pain may have some experience of irritability, anxiety, and depression. Appointments for an evaluation are scheduled and completed promptly. Please let Dr. Rodarte know your timeline for surgery.
